Best practice: Data transfer between environments with pre existing data

Hey guys, is it possible to transfer data from one self-hosted instance with existing data to another env with pre-existing data? Is that possible without issues and how is the target instance reacting to that? WIll the instance be cleaned up due to the transfer?
