Relation field with required true is been ignored

Hi,
I have the follwing field:

  "site": {
      "type": "relation",
      "relation": "oneToOne",
      "target": "api::site.site",
      "required": true
    },

in the ui it is marked as required, but you can still create / update the content without choosing the relation.
How can I fix this?
